From Challenge to Triumph: The Transformation of a Downtown Chandler AZ Home

Have you ever embarked on a project that felt uncertain from the start, yet didn't quite seem wrong either? That was the experience with our latest project in Downtown Chandler, Arizona. It began with its share of hurdles, but as they say, when you pray for something, it doesn’t always come without its trials.

At the outset, we faced a major setback. Just before we were set to begin, our key contractor went in a different direction. To make things more complicated, we were out of town and left without a clear plan. At that moment, we needed divine intervention. We prayed earnestly, seeking God's guidance and support. Our prayer was simple:

“God, we need you,” and direct: “God, you said to stand on Your word,” as I  stood on the hotel Bible.

Despite the uncertainty, we remained steadfast, trusting that this project was part of His plan.

Miraculously, within a day of our return, help appeared. Contractors from the community, whom only God could have brought to our aid, showed up ready to assist. Their support was nothing short of a blessing.

The house itself was in dire condition: the shed was on the verge of collapse, the electrical panel posed a serious fire hazard, the floors were badly warped, and words can’t even describe the state of the kitchen and bathroom.

Despite these challenges, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. From what seemed like ashes, we crafted something beautiful - a fully reconstructed historic home in Downtown Chandler, Arizona.

Why this location?

Many visitors marvel at the beauty of this home and often ask, “Why choose this location for revitalization and reconstruction?” In other words, they question why we selected this Latino neighborhood, where homes have long been undervalued. My response is straightforward: why not?

This area has endured the long-term effects of redlining and systemic disinvestment. Historically, such practices have created deep economic disparities and led to the undervaluation of properties in predominantly Latino and Black communities.

According to the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA), neighborhoods that were redlined have received up to 50% less investment compared to others, affecting infrastructure and public services.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago further reports that these communities face significant economic challenges, including higher poverty rates and lower average incomes.

Compounding this, inspectors often overlook the true value of homes, comparing newer properties with older ones that have been historically undervalued due to discriminatory practices.

And perhaps, God knew that since I’ve always fought for what’s right, I would fight for this neighborhood too.

Testimonials

Richard, Community Member: "The transformation of 171 W. Tulsa is more than just a home renovation; it's a beacon of hope for our entire community. It's proof that positive change is possible, even in the face of adversity."

Maria, Neighbor: "Seeing this home come back to life has inspired many of us. It's a reminder that we are worth the investment and that our history and heritage matter.

By choosing to invest in this neighborhood, we were not only restoring a home but also challenging a legacy of inequality and contributing to the broader revitalization of the community. As we approach the end of this transformation, I hope that the new owner will not only feel the warmth and care embedded in every corner but will also recognize that their home represents equity, community, and a commitment to creating a better place for homeowners to take pride in.

Everyone deserves this, regardless of their zip code.
